Asheville Summer Events Beginning!
I love spring and summer in the mountains. The weather is wonderful with some rain (we get about 40-50 inches/year keeping things lush and green and creeks and streams flowing) but still plenty of great sunny days. Next weekend is Memorial Day weekend, which I think officially kicks off "summer," but things are already under way here.
May is my favoite month, I think. It is still cool with warm sunny day and nights with the windows open. And it is planting season, which means it is plant festival season! Beginning in early may, you can find a plant festival almost every weekend somewhere, and that is in addition to the community tailgate markets kicking into full swing! The Herb Festival at the WNC Farmers' Market is the grand-daddy of them all, but there are too many to chose from.
Today markes the first Downtown After Five for the season. This concert/social gathering on Lexington Av runs through the summer, and it is a great slice of Asheville music, fun, friends, and beer. This is in addition to the Friday night Drum Circle in Pritchard Park, and later in the summer the Shindig on the Green in City/County Plaza.
The Montford Street Festival is also this weekend, and it is one of my favorite festivals. Located in the beautiful Montford Historic District (residential), it is a smaller festival than some with great art, music, and a low-key vibe.
Baseball season is already underway with our local Asheville Tourists. I am not a big baseball fan, but I love to go to Tourists' games. You will see someone you know, and it is just a super small-town atmosphere. The Tourists are the one team that Asheville has embraced with a passion, and attending at least one game a year is a must.
I wish I could say that I take advantage of all these great events, as well as the many other music and art venues, hiking and paddling opportunites, and myriad of restaurant choices. I don't. Sometimes it is all I can do to work, keep up with friends (not as much as I would like) and keep the grass mowed (working on getting rid of as much grass as possible!). But it is nice to know that these things are there, and they are going on with lots of happy interesting people whether I am there or not. And every now and then, I am there!
